Which Type of Dental Plan Is Right for Your Business?

Group dental plans come in several structures. Here’s what you need to know:

DPPO — Dental Preferred Provider Organization

The most popular option for small businesses. Employees can see any licensed dentist — in-network or out — and save more when they stay in-network. Flexible, familiar, and available from most major carriers. Best for: employers who want to offer broad dentist choice without sacrificing coverage quality.

DHMO — Dental Health Maintenance Organization

Lower premiums and predictable copays in exchange for staying within a specific network. Employees select a primary care dentist and get referrals for specialist care. Best for: cost-conscious employers with employees in metro areas who don’t mind trading flexibility for savings.

Indemnity / Fee-for-Service

Maximum provider freedom — employees see any licensed dentist and submit claims for reimbursement. Higher premiums, but no network restrictions at all. Best for: employers with employees across many locations or rural areas with limited in-network provider access.

Voluntary / Employee-Paid Dental

You provide access to group rates; employees pay their own premiums via payroll deduction. Zero cost to the employer — and still a meaningful perk for your team. Best for: employers who want to offer dental benefits without impacting the benefits budget.

WhAT DOES MOST DENTAL INSURANCE COVER?

Once a covered diagnosis is confirmed, the benefit is paid directly to the employee as a lump sum. There is no requirement to submit receipts or justify how the money is spent. It can go toward medical deductibles, rent, childcare, travel for treatment, lost income for a caregiver spouse, or anything else.
